STICKING TO NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS

We always start our new years resolutions off the right way, but as the year goes on, they fall to the wayside and old habits creep back in!

One of the best things you can do to reach your goals, is to write them all down. Get a journal (not just a piece of paper that you will likely lose) and write down everything you want to achieve. Statistics show that those who write their goals down, are more likely to succeed! The process of thinking about your goals and then writing them down, helps keep your focus here. Then as a whole, everything you do naturally moves towards that goal.

Make sure your goals are realistic. If weight loss is your goal, losing 10kg in 1 week is not realistic, nor sustainable. Unfortunately, to get sustainable long term weight loss, you need to make a lifestyle change and put in the work. ‘Quick fix’ diets will not help you keep the weight off in the long term.

Another good practice is to make a vision board that you see everyday. Cut out pics of things that you want, and things that you want to achieve - seeing these everyday will help your focus stay here.

When it comes to treats, allow yourself to indulge every now and then - don’t deprive yourself, or you will never make it! Make healthier choices where you can. For example if you like to bake, try using almond meal and blended dates as healthier alternative to flour and sugar.

If you don’t enjoy exercise, find something that you don’t enjoy the least! In other words, find something that works for you. Join a sports team, gym, small group classes, or even an online programme that you can do from the comfort of your own home. Exercise is an essential part of a healthy lifestyle, so it’s something you shouldn’t avoid. Once you start to reap the benefits, you won’t be able to live without it!

Changing habits takes time, so don’t expect to get it right straight away! Start finding healthier alternatives to your favourite foods, and prioritise your exercise. If you ‘mess up’, don’t worry, move on and get back on track. These will get fewer and far between as your taste buds start to change, and you build an exercise routine.
